Velvet Verdict

Life is a function of decisions. Anything that happens to you is a consequence of decisions you take with a pinch bit of luck. Small, big, easy, hard, naive, right, wrong, all kinds of decisions form the fabric of our life.

So yeah, enough jargonish philosophy. Hi, am drafting this sitting in CCD on the campus at 1616 hours on a sunny Thursday.

Many people think the biggest food industries are burger and pizza and other fast food, but they aren’t, you know what is the quickest growing industry in India at the moment? It is the dark horse coffee industry, a whooping 16,000 crores industry, many zeroes by the way.

Domino’s pulls in 5,000 Cr, McDonald’s pulls in 4,000 Cr revenue alone. India is a tea loving country. 80% of coffee was exported till 2010 due to weak domestic demand. CCD went through huge churn after a promising start. Rather than a dark horse, coffee seems destined for darkness. But seems when you brew deeply, you see that we consume 72,000 tonnes of coffee, and that number is just increasing with a steep slope on the graph.

Sitting in CCD without any orders feels a bit worn out at times, so I decided to order something cold, and then I ordered Cold Velvet Coffee, I thought it was supposed to be sweet, so naive of me, the coffee was not at all sweet, had to add three damn packs of sugar to make it sweet. Costing me 85 INR or a little over a dollar, it was just fine for the money I paid. A bad decision yeah.

Sorry to all the coffee lovers, but I like my coffee, hot or cold, to be sweet, really sweet.

Coming back, the 2020’s pandemic actually exploded the demand for high quality coffee, as a consequence of this, Starbucks saw a staggering 70% spike in sales in 2022 and the same in 2023, making it reach 1,000 crore revenue business in India alone, thanks TATA’s for bringing it in tier 2 cities, the OG, CCD booked 800 crores in revenue, coffee market touched 10,000 Cr.

Now, you’d ask why did I order that coffee, well, its gonna sound stupid or naive or I don’t know what, but I think anything that reads cold coffee is sweet, and since it had velvet in the name, I really expected it to be sweet. Stupid, I know. Anyways, I am gonna always ask is the drink is sweet or not before ordering anything new in coffee shops. Bye.
